Castlepalooza 2013 Ticket Competition

The Castlepalooza line-up was announced on Monday and it really does have us looking forward to the first weekend in August down in Charleville Castle (which was designed by the same lad who designed the GPO – there’s your geeky fact for the week).

We’re going to assume you don’t know every act on the line-up (if you do congrats, you’re cooler than us) so with that in mind there’s a Deezer playlist below with a selection of those announced, enjoy.

So how do you enter for a pair of Castlepalooza weekend passes you ask? Simple, just tell us the name of the Fight Like Apes song included in our playlist. Email your answer to hello@huntercommunications.ie. We’ll announce the winner next week!

Forbidden Fruit Deezer Radio

A festival line-up is announced, you glance over it, see a few names you like and declare yourself satisfied. Right? Well that’s what we do anyway. So many different acts, it’s impossible to keep track of them all…

Which is why we’re loving the Forbidden Fruit radio feature on Deezer.com. That means a dedicated festival page on Deezer, discography widgets on artist pages of the festival website and Deezer accounts and festival tickets to be won across the board.

In short it means we can listen to all the Forbidden Fruit acts in the build-up to the June bank holiday. Which, in turn, allows the Hunter team to sing along to a lot more songs over the weekend. So it mightn’t be a completely good thing for the rest of you.

Kodaline

New Irish music

Every year is an exciting year for Irish music – or any music for that matter – so we won’t go overboard about 2013, but still; there really is a lot to look forward to over the coming months.

We put together five Irish albums we’re particularly looking forward to here. And that’s without even mentioning new albums from Ham Sandwich, Fight Like Apes, Codes, Solar Bears and, possibly, Adebisi Shank. Along with the host of albums from new Irish bands, like Come On Live Long, who we have only heard murmurs from as of yet.

You can also listen to some of the bands mentioned (plus a few more) on the free Deezer playlist below. We might even see some at Castlepalooza later in the year…

Kodaline

By the end of the year these Swords lads are almost definitely going to have fulfilled the promise of their Sound of 2013 nod from the BBC. Their album is out in June 10th, expect to hear plenty of tracks featured on plenty of shows.

O Emperor

Album of the Year nominees back in 2011, this could be the album to put them over the top. Hopefully we’ll catch them at a few festivals – on top of their solo appearances – later in the summer.

Bell X1

Without knowing how ‘Chop, Chop’ will sound yet, it’s an achievement in itself for an Irish band to be big enough to launch an album in the National Concert Hall (June 29th).

Little Green Cars

Kodaline have probably edged ahead in the race for column inches, but the other Irish band to get a place on the Sound of 2013 shortlist look set to fulfill their promise – starting with an album release on July 13th.

Enemies

May 25th brings an important date in the calendar for Ireland’s healthy instrumental rock scene with the release of math-pop foursome Enemies second album.

Awesome April albums

It’s the calm before the festival storm this month and it’s also a great time for album releases. April sees some big names get back in the game like James Blake, The Knife and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, along with some exciting debuts from Willy Moon and Charlii XCX.

Wiley, Flaming Lips and Tyler The Creator already have their new albums streaming on Deezer at the moment, but we’ve also put together this playlist with tracks from each of  NME’s 12 April Albums to Get Excited About.

The snowbound summer playlist

Where’s our sunshine? We’re used to the Irish summer being a bit unpredictable, but we’re also used to some unseasonable sun around this time of year. The kind of temperatures that cause us to rush outside in our temperatures while tourists from warmer climates shake their heads in shock.

Instead what do we have? Snow, and that’s just not as fun in late March.

So to remind us that sunshine is (hopefully) on the way at some stage soon we put together this free Deezer playlist with some of the office’s favourite summer songs. We’ll warn you; it’s eclectic. Eclectic, but very, very good!

Festivals

Festival Wishlist

We’re still excited to hear the Castlepalooza lineup announcement later in the year, but with the confirmation of the Body & Soul and Sea Sessions line-ups this week we’re closer to formulating a fully formed plan for our summer shenanigans.

And while there are plenty of big acts snapped up there are still a few big fish for the remaining festivals to land. We’ve put together a list of some of the acts we’d like to see pop up at an Irish festival this year.

We’ve put together a free Deezer playlist (below) with our picks. But who would you like to hear?

The Big Names
Possibles
My Bloody Valentine – Yet to announce an Irish date, but surely we’re set to see them this summer? They’ve already announced appearances at seven different festivals including Primavera.

Depeche Mode – Taking in plenty of festivals this summer as part of their European Tour, though they will be in North America by mid-August…

Outside Bet
Daft Punk – No dates confirmed yet – or even a tour for that matter – but could be a late (and welcome) addition to a few line-ups.

Small, But Great
Possibles
YACHT – Great and underrated electropop band from Oregon, would be brilliant addition to a smaller festival. No European dates announced yet, we live in hope.

Pokey LaFarge – Great live bluegrass act, as anyone who saw them on Jools Holland’s 2012 Hootnanny will testify. Playing European dates in August, so they’ll be in town.

Outside Bet
Wu Tang Clan – No tours scheduled yet, but there hasn’t been much in the way of hip-hop scheduled so far and this lot would get a great reception at an Irish festival

Dreaming
Rolling Stones – Not a hope in hell, unless you’re talking Glastonbury, but wouldn’t it be great to get them out of a stadium and into some nice, muddy festivals?

LCD Soundsystem – Possibly even less chance than Rolling Stones, but maybe, if we wish really hard, James Murphy will wake up bored one morning and decide to go back on that whole retiring LCD business.

SXSW2013

SXSW – An ‘A’ to ‘Z’

It’s that time of the year again and as the 26th edition of the ever-growing SXSW gets up and running we thought about some of the musicians who have graced the event since it began in 1987. Too many musicians to recall for a single Deezer playlist if truth be told. So we settled on an A to Z; 26 acts in all (do you see what we did there?).

And, in keeping with the history of SXSW lineups, this playlist runs from the cool (Best Coast, Janelle Monae) to the obscure (Volovan, Uncle Tupero) to the I-can’t-believe-he-performed-here (Lionel Richie). Enjoy!

Meteor Song of The Year

Thursday night brings the eighth edition of the Meteor Choice Prize from Vicar Street, Dublin and yet another reminder that Irish music is in great health at the moment. Along with the best album prize the night also sees the winner declared for the hotly contested Meteor Choice Song of the Year award.

Which, we think, is a good chance for us to catch up on the best of Irish music from 2012. Listen to all ten nominated songs here on this free Deezer playlist.

Irish acts at SXSW

SXSW kicks off on March 8th and runs until St Patrick’s Day; like a Cheltenham Festival for music buffs. The Music from Ireland showcase will be bringing 17 Irish acts to perform this year at a showcase on March 13th and the larger Full Irish Breakfast bill on March 15th.

The line-up includes established acts like Ash and Delorentos, up-and-comers Kodaline and Little Green Cars and several bands who have a strong domestic reputation like Funeral Suits and Hudson Taylor. We put together this playlist on Deezer Ireland to give you a taste of the great Irish music that will have people in Austin, Texas talking next week.

DEEZER FLEXES BRAND PERSONALITY VIA NEW GLOBAL CREATIVE COLLABORATION WITH ARTIST MCBESS

Leading music subscription service Deezer today unveiled the creative output of a new global brand collaboration with London-based illustrator mcbess. Deezer has been working with the artist on an exercise to explore its brand identity as a worldwide service that breaks down the barriers to music discovery and delight.*

With his distinctive, powerful hand mcbess brings to life Deezer’s belief that music is a universal language that cannot be restrained or repressed. The illustrations are inspired by everyday life, by music and musical instruments that are re-modeled and contorted to create a distinctive Deezer microcosm. A 30 second animation, produced by CRCR, is available to view at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkvEZhSr0RU&feature=youtu.be

In mainly black graphics mcbess unfolds an energetic and surreal narrative in which music is uncorked, bottled and finally released for mass enjoyment and celebration. The film has a revolutionary, almost riotous atmosphere that shows the vigor and force of music physically smashing boundaries in mcbess’s signature kinetic style. Featuring musicians with feral grins and flexuous instruments the film is set to a thunderous new remix of Pop Levi’s genre-defiant track ‘Wannamama’.

Axel Dauchez, Deezer’s CEO said: “Deezer is a pure music player. We live music, we breathe music, we are music. Our passion for music makes us unique. We’re all about new discoveries and possibilities, which is why through Deezer you can access music across all devices and through all browsers worldwide, offline and multi-local; from hi-fi to smartphones, from home to the car or the great outdoors, from your own music to your friends’ music.”

“This bold new collaboration with mcbess represents the first step of a plan to interrogate our global brand proposition through creative partnerships and executions. As a musician and a visual artist, mcbess was the standout candidate for our first collaboration. The film perfectly captures the restless, explosive spirit of our brand and exposes Deezer’s core belief of music without boundaries.”

Commenting on the creative, mcbess said: “When you draw you draw what you know. I have been using Deezer for many years, and music is very important to me, so I was eager to be involved in this project.

“This is one of the best pieces of my work out there. It is a genuine collaboration and it’s the first time I have been able to see my drawings animate in a way that is true to my style: black and white, fluid and full of energy. Imperfections are all part of the charm, and the overall effect is dark, dynamic and a little risqué – like an old fashioned Betty Boop cartoon with a rock and roll vibe – which suits the Deezer brand perfectly.”

Deezer is making its first foray into TV advertising with a seven week campaign featuring the film planned for commercial spots on France’s Metropole network. The film debuted on M6 at 9:40pm on Sunday 20 January. A further outdoor campaign rotating six visuals on the Paris Metro will begin on 29 January.

The collaboration comes one month after Deezer launched the first truly global free (ad-supported) music streaming service to a potential audience of at least 600 million people across more than 150 countries. Deezer currently has more than three million paying subscribers that listen to an average of 60 hours of music per month.
