Does Harlem Shake mean anything to you?

Does Harlem Shake mean anything to you? If you spend any length of time on youtube it probably will. And it’s unlikely your facebook feed hasn’t included a least a few links to variations on the Harlem Shake theme. The formula is basic enough, an individual dances alone to a song called, you guessed it, ‘Harlem Shake’. This person is generally wearing a helmet (any helmet will do) and usually being ignored by those around them. Then, suddenly, everyone else joins in and it’s one big party. www.blog.deezer.com/deezer-does-the-harlem-shake

We’re well used to these internet crazes by now; a video goes viral and suddenly there are hundreds, thousands, of videos spoofing – or paying tribute to – the original. But this particular craze is slightly different. How? Well no one seems to be able to agree on how it started. A google search reveals that a group of Australian lads got things going with a video posted online a little over a fortnight ago, a video that now has over 10 million views. But try telling that to someone who has seen the Norwegian army do it first, or chat show host Jimmy Fallon, or the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, or even a Harlem Shake on the top of Dublin Bus. Videos can be made and uploaded so easily and quickly now that the tributes and spoofs of a viral video can quickly overtake the original.

In the space of two weeks Harlem Shake has managed to go from viral video to overdone meme. There will be plenty of new Harlem Shake videos released over the coming weeks, many by companies hoping to jump on the bandwagon, but they are as likely to be greeted with a collective moan as ‘Harlem Shake fatigue’ sets in. You will also read the phrase ‘Harlem Shake fatigue’ a lot more, but we’re claiming the copyright on that one.

Which brings us to you. There you are with your new phone, it’s a got a lovely video camera built in and there even appears to be an editing function available. You have always secretly suspected that your destiny is to be labelled the Irish Scorsese, and now is your chance. How do you prevent your creative efforts being lost in the mix? Well you have three options.

Option One

Get in there first. Well not first technically, just a very close second. The minute you see something funny online think of a way to piggyback on the creators idea. Isaac Newton spoke of ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’. Well it’s just like that, except you will be standing on the shoulders of the guy who dressed his dog up like a person and uploaded the video.

Option Two

Come up with your own idea. This requires dedication, imagination, creativity and skill. If that all sounds like too much hard work we refer you back to Option One.

Option Three

Cats. Get a cat. Film the cat all the time. Post everything the cat does online. Watch the views pile up. You could actually be the Irish Scorsese, but you will achieve far more succes by just focusing on your cat. One day the internet will consist of nothing but cat videos, get ahead of the curve.

Good luck, and please remember us when you are a youtube sensation.

What is “Good” PR?

1: Good PR is telling the client what they need to hear instead of what they want to hear. Good PR recognizes that the best “PR strategy” needs to be followed-up with the client’s good products/services or else it’s all a vain.

2: Good PR is not just about the over-glorified launch. Good PR helps build and sustain a groundswell of brand support — incrementally changing consumer behaviors via a steady stream of relevant and candid communication to both “media” and “consumers.”

3: Good PR celebrates the client’s customers in an inclusive, non-exploitive way. And, good PR welcomes the input of “neutrals” and especially “critics,” and adapts strategy accordingly.

4: Good PR is proactive in idea generation and responsive in a crisis. Good PR finds the balance.

5: Good PR is measurable. (And yet also hard to measure, since most clients want to measure different things.)

6: Good PR leverages pre-existing relationships with influential people — relationships built on trust and credibility earned over years of service.

7: Good PR doesn’t need to know anyone in particular in the media. Even though such relationships can come in handy, good PR almost always “gets ink” because a good story has been well-told to the right people.

Proud To Be ___ Years Old

The gorgeous ladies of Advanced Style, took part in Advanced Style Fashion at the Lincoln Centre during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. Ten stunning ladies strutted their stuff on an imaginary catwalk for New York Fashion Week. The flash-mob of Old-Age-Trendsetters aged  60 – 95 years old modeled their favourite looks down the catwalk before being moved on by Police Officers.  These fascinating older women use their keen sense of style as an extension of their already sparkling personalities, we don’t need any convincing that fashion is not just for the young! Check out some of the photos from the event.

Retired and Revived

Retirees in 2012 have begun to take a whole new direction, from adorning fashion magazine covers to taking up blogging! These OATs (Old Age Trendsetters) are being favoured the world over with celebrities being swapped for people who better represent their customers and target audience.

Marks & Spencers are the most recent brand to jump on the late life creativity band wagon culling Dannii, Mylene and Twiggy in favour of models ranging from 20 – 57 (scroll down for video)

Cult magazine The Gentlewoman, a publication that has previously featured Adele, Christy Turlington and Céline designer Phoebe Philo on its front page, has also grabbed hold of the old-age-trendsetters-trend, featuring 86-year-old star of Murder She Wrote, Angela Langsbury on the front cover of their Autumn / Winter 2012 issue. Far from ‘Gimmicky’ – Angela’s shoot is inspirational for older women and is a stepping stone to cementing older-women in to today’s fashion.

Shock of the old: Angela Lansbury on the cover of the Gentlewoman.

From fashion campaigns to photo-shoots to the ever growing popular topic of blogging, blogging has become an essential tool to most web-users around the globe, with most teens now thinking a blog is just as important as having a Facebook and / or a Twitter account – blogging however is a key way to express opinion and to reach an audience. Ronna Benjamin a previous real estate attorney of 28 years had an epiphany around the time she turned 50 years old – leaving her life as a real estate attorney and jumping right into the world of writing with her own blog www.100sleeplessnights.com, writing humorously about thing’s over 50s are concerned about, adult children, aging parents, illness, anxiety and insomnia to name a few.

These Old Age Trendsetters are just the beginning of a world embracing diversity and old-age  - a world the Hunters long for…

Smartphone Apps To Aid ‘Aging In Place’

Hunter Communications has commissioned the Department of Music and Creative Media in Dundalk Institute of Technology to produce ‘Redefining Ageing – New Online Generations,” a document focused on the over-50s and how the internet can boost their lives. Today we’re discussing how smartphone apps can be helpful for caregivers and seniors living independently.

“Independent living,” “non-assisted living” or “aging in place” more or less mean the same thing: staying in your own home as long as you’re able, as opposed to moving to a health care environment. Today, high-tech monitoring systems and other gadgets are helping seniors age in place, independently and comfortably, while giving their family greater peace of mind.

A growing number of downloadable software applications (“apps”) are available for use with smartphones and tablets. These apps can be used by those who are living independently or by caregivers as a means to remotely keep in touch, monitor and, if need be, assist those who need you.

Here are a few apps to consider. Most of these are for use with the Apple iOS family of devices — namely, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch — but some of these (where indicated) are available for other platforms, too.

iCam

If a loved one has a computer with a webcam, the iCam app allows you to monitor multiple live video feeds over Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. With the person’s consent, you can check in, visually, to ensure he or she is doing well. You can also record and play back events, if need be, and set up the app to notify you when motion is detected (the free iCamSource PC or Mac software is required). For instance, you might place a webcam by the medicine cabinet or fridge (or both) so you’ll know when a loved one is taking his or her pills or eating a meal. On a related note, free video chatting apps such as Skype and FaceTime are also a great way to keep in touch.

Tell My Geo

Iconosys’s Tell My Geo is a smartphone application that can find or track, for instance, an Alzheimer’s patient. The cared-for’s smartphone can be set to send regular location updates (using GPS technology) to a loved one’s smartphone. Plus, the app has large emergency buttons to press, such as “Where Am I?” “Send Location” and “Call For Help.” This app (available in English or Spanish for Android devices) is free to download, but at a monthly cost for the monitoring. Registered users are mailed adhesive decals to place on the phone with information for emergency medical professionals. Tell My Geo also contains medical information, sort of like a digital med-alert bracelet, including medical conditions, allergies, blood type, and doctor and emergency contact info.

SwannView

If your loved one doesn’t have a computer webcam, a more robust video monitoring solution — that works on virtually any smartphone or tablet — is SwannView, a free download that works with Swann Security’s all-in-one kit. This package includes four color cameras (Swann’s PRO-580 model; each with 480 lines of resolution) and a 500-gigabyte digital video recorder (DVR) to record up to 30 days of video from all four cameras, simultaneously. SwannView works over Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity – on a BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, Windows or Symbian device – so you can remotely log in to see a live, real-time view. These mountable all-weather cameras also have an infrared LED night vision feature that can see up to 65 feet in the dark. Similar to the above mentioned iCamSource software, you can also set up this kit to send you an email if the cameras detect motion.

Desk Job Workouts

We came across a great article in yesterday’s Irish Daily Star, on how to stay healthy while sitting down at work! A desk-job workout, if you will… Many people work long hours behind their desk just to make ends meet. Stress, convenience foods, and a forced sedentary lifestyle can wreak havoc on your health and your waistline. A recent study of working women showed those who sat for up to seven hours a day were much more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Follow these desk-job fitness tips, to help you stay healthy…

Tip 1 - During work phone calls, try standing up and gently “pottering” around your desk! It is estimated that standing burns up to 30% more calories than sitting.

Tip 2 -  If you live within a reasonable distance of work, ride your bike or walk to work for added exercise.  For extra added exercise try to take the stairs at least part of the way. Train yourself to do one extra flight per week.

Tip 3 - Try to ditch the email, and talk to colleagues directly. It could ward off the aches and pains of poor posture by getting up every 30 minutes or so to stretch or walk.

Tip 4 -  Keep your home desk and the office refrigerator stocked with healthy snacks that will help you curb cravings and avoid temptations at the vending machine and office parties.

Tip 5 - To work your abdominal muscles, hold your stomach for a few seconds when breathing in, then release when breathing out. If possible, get some fresh air in your lungs by taking a walk outside
